Anamorelin “Ghrelin Receptor Agonist” – Anamorelin is a “ghrelin-receptor agonist,” meaning it is a Growth Hormone Secretagogue that is stomach derived. It is also supposed to increase lean body mass according to PubMed.gov “The Use of Gherkin Receptor Agonists As A Treatment For Animal Models of Disease: Efficacy and Mechanism” (Department of Pediatrics, Division of Pediatric Endocrinology). Research shows that anamorelin may be the first drug ever to effectively improve cancer chacexia. Chacexia is the “wasting” condition where a person loses a significant amount of bodyweight and musclemass (news.cancerconnect.com). Anamorelin is designed to stimulate the “hunger hormone” ghrelin.
In order to test if anamorelin works, there had been two trials consisting of 979 patients were tested on patients with Stage III and IV non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). All patients participating in the trial were diagnosed with 5% or more with weight loss within 6 months. The trial ran for 12 weeks, and within those 12 weeks where some received 100mg of anamorelin and the others used placebo. The result showed that those who used anamorelin gained more weight than those who used placebo.
There haven’t been a lot of studies done on anamorelin, and they are gathering more information on the continued studies.
Here is a video that goes into more detail about Anamorelin:
